If you’re interested in looking for ways to make your home look and feel larger without adding an extra room or wing onto your home, there are some interior design methods that can help you maximize your space and give the illusion of larger rooms. At Monarch Paint & Design Centers, our friendly experts can help you create exactly the look you want in your home.

REFLECT LIGHT WITH MIRRORS

Probably one of the most well-known and popular ways to give the illusion of more space is by incorporating mirrors into your decor. Strategically placed mirrors that reflect natural light instantly make a room feel more spacious. Some ideas include a wall covered with mirrors or a cluster of decorative mirrors on the wall. Tall, lean mirrors help to elongate a space and draw eyes upward toward the ceiling.

COLOR

We know color is important but incorporating color to make a space feel larger can be tricky. As a general rule, we’ve been taught that darker colors on the walls typically make a space feel smaller, but if done correctly, darker colors can have the opposite effect. In tiny rooms, like a small bathroom or bedroom, dark wallpaper or a rich dark paint color can make these small spaces feel grand. Another trick is to add color to the ceiling. White ceilings feel like a fifth wall, making the space feel smaller. But matching or coordinating the ceiling color can add depth and make a room feel open and airy.

TRIM AND BASEBOARD COLORS

A less known strategy is painting baseboards and woodwork a dark color. This might seem counterintuitive at first, but by doing this, you will highlight the boundaries of the space and make it feel larger and more defined.

LARGE FURNITURE

Another technique with a big impact that might also seem counterintuitive is going with a large statement piece, like a large couch in the living room or large bed in the bedroom. The illusion is created by filling the surrounding space with smaller pieces, like a small coffee table or night stand. This technique will help the space look open and uncluttered. It’s important to remember not to block windows and natural light with the statement piece.

CLEAR CHAIRS

Incorporating clear chairs and furniture is a fun and trendy way to add functionality to your space without adding visual clutter.

BUILT-INS

Built-ins are a great way to add style and functionality into your home without adding clutter. Bookshelves, television stands, window seats are all things can all be incorporated into built-ins, making them versatile and multifunctional without taking up additional space, creating an open feel.
